TESTING YOUR COMPREHENSION 1) Why are fossil fuels our most prevalent source of energy today? Why are they considered nonrenewable sources of energy? Today, the three main fossil fuels that are in demand are oil, coal and natural gas. These fossil fuels are prevalent because they are efficient to burn, ship, and store based on high energy content. Fossil fuels also provide for our daily needs such as transportation, heating, cooking and electricity. Based on our current rates of consumption, we will use up the Earth’s store of fossil fuels faster than created therefore making it a nonrenewable source of energy. After fossil fuels are created and depleted, they cannot be replaced in our civilization. This extremely long process takes†¦show more content†¦What consequences could there be for our society if we do not shift soon to renewable energy sources? â€Å"Peak oil† refers to when the rate of production of oil will reach its highest rate and decline gradually. If our production declines after the peak of oil and demand continues to increase, scientists say we will fall into an oil shortage. Many experts think we are about to pass the production peak for oil since Hubert’s peak was proved to be accurate, every since 1970, U.S oil production peaked and has continued to decline ever since. Factors of this problem were the discoveries of new oil fields that peaked 30 years ago, but we still continue extract and consume more oil than we have been finding. In addition depending on year to year use for production, would make us unable to realize that we have pasted the peak of oil production until four years after, so we wouldn’t even known if we passed the peak or not. For example many oil companies and government are untrustworthy about the amount of oil reserves there are, and the estimated difference on how much we can extract based on how much oil there is. Also, a U.S geological survey report shows that there are about 2 trillion barrels of oil left in the world and not 1 trillion. Developed countries such as the U.S continue to use this limited supply of oil because their demand is increasing rather than a developing country where they are beginning to industrialize. The Conflict Of Police Brutality And Racial Profiling

Mia Ryder-Marks 3070037 October 2, 2017 Professor Saad Khan Final Essay Proposal Essay Summary: My exigent topic is focusing on the prominent conflict of African American males and police officials in Western nations, focusing directly on the American South. In the late 1920’s African Americans in the U.S.A, were hopeful that their struggle against racism was nearing a successful conclusion with the start of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People). For many years, especially for people not of colour, racism, racial discrimination and police brutality were â€Å"hidden† from the mainstream media. Comparing statistics such as, in 2014, American police officials killed 1,106 people and Norwegian police forces killed two. o How the American government handles and responses to the backlash of police brutality court cases, protests and the demand for implementation to change versus other countries. o Illustrating that despite this larger emphasis on the international conflict between unequal groups, it is still a very divided conversation. Second Main Point: †¢ Secondly, I will be explaining the utilization of state power and resources as an issue of great significance in the Western society. Though this conception of power and disadvantage was originally a purely economic perspective based on the divide of socioeconomics; racial and ethnic identities have become an integral part of conflict theory hypotheses as they are defined and deliberated today. o This reflects the fact that race, poverty, and crime are inextricably linked within American society, and examining this broader picture ofShow MoreRelatedPolice Brutality1314 Words   |  6 Pages Police brutality Those of the minority community have been subjected, for many decades, to violence by those in law enforcement in the United States. One Fat Englishman Essay Example For Students

One Fat Englishman Essay 1. One Fat English Man 2. The author of the novel is Kingsley Amis, copyright1963. 3. Kingsley Amis was a British writer from England. 4. Major CharactersRoger Micheldene is the man the book focuses primarily upon. He is a shortishfat Englishman of forty (6) and a publisher. Of the seven deadly sins Rogerconsiders himself to be gluttony, sloth and lust. He considers himself mostqualified in the sin of anger (8). He is so fat that his hips have fusedtogether and he is forced to wear a brace. He also drinks excessively and usesSnuff. His drink of preference is gin with water added and no ice. He has a wifein England, but still enjoys interludes with women. His character does notchange within the novel. He remains a selfish, fat, Englishman who is quick toanger, is willing to cheat on his wife whenever possible and drinks heavily. Thus he considered a round, fully developed, but static character. Through outthe novel he seems to be drawn by a need to receive love from women, although hediscounts their thoughts and general stature. Through all his encounters heseeks love from Helene far more than the others. He feels he is a great man whenhe conquerors her. Helene Bang was born in Denmark, but her parents brought herto America when she was ten. She settles with her family in Idaho. When she wastwenty-one, while on a visit in Denmark, she met Ernst Bang. She married Ernstand moved back to America with him. Although she was born in Denmark sheconsiders herself an American. She is a very attractive woman; many of the malestudents at Budweiser find her attractive, too. She is a round character, butstill static. She lives a life endeared to her husband and son through out thenovel. Even in her affair at the end of the novel with Irving she still claimsshe cannot lie to her husband. However, she confirms she is not i n love withRoger, when I go to bed with you I simply feel less sorry for you (185).Irving Macher is a brilliant young Jewish kid from New York who attendsBudweiser. (9). He is the author of a bizarre novel, Blikie Heaven, which Joeasked Roger to critique and publish. Physically he is described by Roger asbrown-hairedfreckled, with a mild crew-cutwith nothing noticeable abouthim but a pair of restless grey eyes (11). He is a round character; Amisdevelops him through various encounters with Roger, but static also. He isRogers antagonist. Every time Roget tries to win the love of Helene he stepsin to mess things up. For example, he steals Rogers lecture notes beforeRoger is to give a speech before a few hundred men, is apart of a trick thatinvolves a young lady biting Rogers neck and takes Helene to New York. He isa young who is ready to argue, but also willing to admit his weaknesses. 5. Minor Characters Ernst Bang is a Germanic philologist, who was originally fromDenmark. He moved to America after taking a leave from Copenhagen, a universityhe taught at in Denmark, and received a years appointment at Budweiser. He ismarried to Helene. In Rogers mind Ernst is the only thing standing betweenhim and Helene. He is young and attractive. He is also very trusting, and doesnot suspect Roger is having an affair with Helene. Arthur Bang is the son ofHelene and Ernst. He attends a farm school and has especially high aptitudes andstudy habits. He is important because he spoils a lot of Rogers romanticplans. For example, on Halloween Helene uses the excuse that Arthur would behome too soon from school for the two to carry out a physical part of the affair(57). Mollie Atkins is married to Strode Atkins, who considers himself anEnglishman. The two seem happily married. However, she has numerous affairs, including one with Roger. She is drunk one of the last times that she seesRoger . Father Colgate is a priest at Budweiser. He is a flamboyantly handsomeand muscular man of thirty, dressed in well-tailored clerical garb (88). He hasa serious concern for Rogers current state of being and worries over hissoul. Father Colgate is added to the novel to symbolize the constant battleRoger has between whats right, Gods way, and what he does. 6. Three MainSettings Joe Derlangers home is one of the most important settings within thework. It is here that Roger is reunited with Helene and also has his firstphysical encounter with Mollie Atkins. Roger arranges to meet with Mollie at alater time and to call Helene. It is here, too, that the group freely speaksabout English men and bash on the British. For example, in a charade game theyplayed the group acted out the word Brutishly. The whole gang, includingHelene, managed to make Roger feel degraded (25). The author uses thismoderately neutral atmosphere to acquaint the characters in a relatively shorttime span and allows Rog ers mind to wander, divulging the past. The Bangshome is where Helene and Roger carry out their affair. The author specificallyuses this setting because he is pointing out the fact Roger cares for no one buthimself. Ernst trusts Roger enough to let him stay with his family, and Rogerrepays him by sleeping with his wife. This also puts Helene in an awkwardsituation. She is forced to deal with hiding the truth from her son, too. Despite the awkward conditions the two manage to continue with their passionateinterludes. The atmosphere advances the plot in that Roger uses the home as abase and continues experiencing the various aspects of America and women whilealways returning to the room located next to Helene and Ernsts. Atkinsapartment in New York is a setting that the author first introduces at Joesparty, but is not an intricate part of the novel until close to the end. StrodeAtkins offers Irving a key to the apartment as a refuge for the young man. Irving takes Helene to the apartment. They sleep together and spend a night outon the town. This setting is used as a conflict point between Irving and Rogerand between Roger and Helene. Roger is angry that Irving took Helene to New Yorknot because he was worried for her safety but because he was jealous and angry. He traveled all the way to New York to catch them at the apartment, but did notplan what hed do. He instantly becomes angry with Irving, wanting to pounceon him, but is stopped by Helene. Irving comments, Im not only a coward,Im also a liar and a thief and I value worldly success too muchIn anyevent sticks and stones may break my bones, only were agreed sticks andstones are out, and words will never hurt me, no words youre likely to thinkof uttering anyhow(182). Robert also faces a confrontation with Helene. She asks him to go away, and tells him she has never felt the same kind of lovefor him that she has felt for her. This is a good setting for this to occurbecause no one else is around to stop the dispute. This is a good setting forAmis to use for a final battle between Irving and Roger, fairly neutral ground. 7.Plot Synopsis The novel begins before an evening party at the estate of JoeDerlanger. Roger Micheldene and Joe are discussing the guests what will arriveshortly. Here the author sets the scene as being relaxed and nonconfrontational. In the initial scenes the reader is acquainted with most of thenovels characters. Also the reader learns Roger is only in the United Statesfor sixteen days. He hadnt seen Helene for nearly eighteen months. The pastbegins to unravel at Joes party. Roger remembers the last time he tried tomake verbal love to Helene, and how Arthur interrupted them. The groupthen decides to go swimming. Roger is too embarrassed of his obesity to swimwith the others. Instead he sits neat the side of the pool and tries to enjoythe Helenes physical appearance. After dinner that evening, he has a chanceto speak with Helene while the group is playing a game and she gives him herphone number. Less than an hour later Roger is attracted to Mollie Atkins andsets up a place to rend ezvous with her, too. Roger goes to the Helenes homeand the two carry on their affair (56). She eventually walks away from his lapwith the excuse that she has a telephone call to make. She then works in thekitchen and tells Roger no more can happen that day because Arthur will be homefrom school soon. Roger says outright, Lets go to bed. She says nobecause its Halloween and the school will probably let out early. The readeris given a new look at Roger. He is not simply upset with the fact Arthur willbe home early, but with the fact Helene did not tell him this earlier. He isupset that he spent the whole day with her and traveled all the way to her homethinking that theyd go to bed but thinks the entire day was a waste ofhis time because they did not. This shows Roger is not solely interested inspending time with Helene, but in receiving sexual pleasure. Arthur then returnshome, followed by Ernst. The tension between Arthur and Roger is evident duringtheir initial conversation and th e Scrabble game that the two play together. The Cuban Missile Crisis: Eyeball to Eyeball EssayAnother conflict is the fact Roger sees himself as a proper Englishman and doesnot agree with most of Americas customs and its abuse of the Englishlanguage. He normally made a point of not conforming to American usage ortaste in the smallest particular (7). He has a tough time submitting to thedifferent language that Americans use and their way of thinking. One night hegot into a deep conversation with a cab driver while drunk. The cab driverresponded, Your basic objection to Jack Kennedy appears to be that he is anAmerican. Dont think I dont sympathies, but unfortunately we have this lawhere that says the President of the United States has to be a citizen of theRepublic. Unreasonable, I grant you, but there it is. Dura lex sed lex, old man, which is Iroquois for Why dont you go back to your island and staythere. Good-night (108). There is also a very evident conflict-takingplace between Roger and God. It is obvious God does not agre e with Rogerslifestyle. However, Roger chooses to call upon the Lord at times that pleaseshim. One of his chronic difficulties was reconciling his belief in theimportance of priests and the Church with his apathy towards most of the formerand aversion from most of the doctrines and practices of the latter, a conflictalso to be seen in his relations with the Omnipotent (89). He continues in suchfashion by stating religion Superhuman only on scale (91). Obviously Rogerdoes not want to bow before a force that does not permit him to have the kind offun he wants to. Father Colgate also has a conflict between himself and Roger. He comments, In my calling one very quickly develops what might almost becalled an instinct whereby he comes to detect infallibly the signs of a soul atvariance with God. You, my son, are very disturbedA man doesnt act like achild unless his is hurting him. Your soul is hurting you, Mr. Micheldene. Wont you allow me to hear your confession, my son? Soon. The sooner thebetter (101). This is truly a problem and disappointment for Father Colgatebecause he genuinely cares for Rogers soul. The real conflict for FatherColgate arises when Roger finally asks the father to hear his confessions but isinsincere in his repentance. The father must make the call as to whether or notRogers repenting is valid. There is a conflict between Roger and women ingeneral. He has been married at least two times and has not managed to remainfaithful. He uses women for sexual pleasure, caring only for his own feelings, and then comments on how silly women are. He does not like the power they haveover men nor their ability to change men. 9. Major Themes One major theme withinthe novel is the search for self worth. Roger tries to find his worth inmeaningless relationships and alcohol because he is so insecure about himself asan individual. This is parallel to the fact that he is fat. I think most peoplehave the same type of problem. They feel one aspect of themselves is so hideousthat they try to cover it up inside by lashing out on others or simply usingothers to feel good. Amis is pointing this out through Rogers actions andrelationships. Besides that I have a difficult time finding themes within thework. I saw how Amis continually pointed out how lust conquered a man andwomans sense of right and wrong. However, Helene states she cannot lie toErnst about where she is. Obviously her entire life is a lie because he believesher to be faithful. Perhaps Amis is also trying to point out the fact thatthings are not always as they seem. People seem to have good jobs and money, butthat doesnt account for happiness, as in Joes unhappiness with his lifeand sudden outbursts of anger. Also he sort of hints at the fact that men areonly out to get what they want and is ready to squash any one who stands intheir way. For example, Roger is angrier with Irving over the fact that he stoleHelene for th e weekend then the fact Irving humiliated him so many times. Overall, I believe Amis wrote very little moral value into the novel, nor did heincorporate major themes. It seems to me the novel is simply a satire aboutAmerican life. Amis also uses outrageous instances to make us fell sorry for thefat Englishman that is really undeserving of pity because he is so mean andnasty. 10. My Favorite Scene My favorite scene within the novel is quite simple, but I find it humorous. Roger is at Helenes home and her son Arthur justreturned home from school. Arthur is unhappy with Roger being there and Roger isjust as unhappy that the childs presence spoiled his afternoon plans withHelene. However, Roger must make an attempt to show Helene that he iscompassionate by trying to befriend Arthur. After a one sided conversation withArthur, Roger is about to give up. Then Arthur asked Roger to play scrabble withhim. The two sat down to play and needless to say Roger drew letters from thebag that offered no chance making a word for quite a while. Arthur, a smallchi ld with a smaller grasp on language than Roger, was winning. Eventually Ernstcame home and Roger was stuck playing the game in front of both Helene andRoger. The humiliation of being routed at a scrabble game by a seven-year-oldseemed destined to pass by Roger (66). Thus, Roger asked to resign from thegame, but Arthur informed him that resigning is not allowed. Thus, they wereforced to continue playing. Arthurs next word was N-I-T-E-R. Roger looked atthe word curiously and said Niter? Whats that supposed to mean? Arthurironically said, You know, like a one-nighter. To which Roger respondedNo such word and challenged Arthur. Arthur opened a dictionary and readNiter, a Potassium nitrate. A supposed nitrous element. Roger still arguedwith Arthur and said the correct spelling is N-I-T-R-E. When Arthur shook hishead Roger angrily stammered, IBut that is a bloody Americandictionary. To which Arthur responded, This is bloody America. I foundthis quite humorous because I could easily visual ize the scene. A large man anda small child playing a game, the older man losing and then the childsretort. I also enjoyed the fact Arthur then quoted Rogers new score ofminus 21. 11. The Significance of the title The title of the novel is OneFat Englishman. The novel is named this because its main character is anEnglishman, Roger, who is considerably overweight, fat. 12. The authors pointof view The novels point of view is third person omniscient. This allows thereader to know not only what Roger is thinking and feeling but what others are, too. Thus, the reader does not simply see everything from Rogers perspective. Also this allows the reader to understand more of what is going on between andin scenes.

Neoclassicism Essay Example For Students

Neoclassicism Essay Neoclassicism:Neoclassicism represented a reaction against the passionate and enthusiastic renaissance view of man as being basically good and possessed of an endless potential for religious and intellectual growth. Neoclassical theorists, by contrast, saw man as an imperfect being, inherently sinful, whose potential was limited. They replaced the renaissance emphasis on the imagination, on invention, experimentation, and with an emphasis on order, reason, on common sense, on religious, political and economic reaction. They maintained that man himself was the most appropriate subject of art, and saw art itself as essentially valuable because it was somehow useful and as something which was properly intellectual rather than emotional. Importance on proper subject matter and details to an overall design, to engage in their work like balance, proportion, unity, and harmony which would facilitate the process of educating, and correcting mankind. Their favorite literary forms were the essay, the letter, the satire, and the spoof, while the theatre saw the development of the drama and sentimental comedy. Many of the primary beliefs of Neoclassicism in fact have reappeared in the twentieth century. In the Neoclassic era hierarchy system was prevalent and prominent. We come to know about this from the story Tartuffe where Orgon displays his higher authority over Dorine. Such a system is still existent in most parts of the world but in a subtler manner for example the Caste system that exists in countries like India which were prominent earlier but are being eradicated from society. The class system still exists today but in the minds of people due to differences in social status, wealth and power. Another example would b e where person with higher power like a politician can get away with misdemeanor where as a layman cannot. In the sixteenth and seventeenth century authors such as Moliere and Voltaire had to alter parts of their stories in order to please the king because if the stories criticized the royal community the circulation of the story would be stopped and the author would be punished. But in todays world there is lot more freedom one can express ones thoughts freely and openly but even in todays world a person is criticized if his or her writing offends a group or community for example Salman Rushdies book Satanic Verses. This shows that the neoclassic period still influences the world today.

(2) What purposes do you expect your portfolio to serve? 3) How did you make your design and rhetorical choices with your audience(s) in mind? Advice for Selecting Portfolio Components (Adapted from the Penn State SEC programs selection advice) Make a list of the best work youve done in your Rhetoric Civic Life course (both the fall and spring semesters). Additionally, consider including projects created for other courses, especially those that received a superior grade or facial recognition. Consider the primary message you want the portfolio to send and to what audiences you wish to send it. Do you want to demonstrate your passion for human rights? For international education? For environmental concerns and creative writing?Choose one or two key passions that you want to serve as the guiding themes of the port folio-?maybe one of these themes could relate to your future career goals. Then, add items to your list (created in step one) that demonstrate your commitment to that passion. These items might be academic work, but they old also be a written, spoken, visual, or online text created for an extra- curricular activity or as part of a community effort. Dont worry if all your projects/papers werent A work when you first submitted them: you can revise relevant good or even average work by obtaining feedback from The Undergraduate Writing Center tutors, your classmates, your instructor, and so on. Review the required modes for your portfolio.Consider which of your selected pieces could fulfill these modes. Keep in mind that you could revise a piece to make it suit a mode you need to cover. For example, an academic ice of writing for your major could be revised for a specific public audience to serve as public discourse (and this revision would likely lead to a more coherent final portfolio than if you chose a paper written in your freshman year simply because it was already written for a public audience). Alternatively, you might record an audio file to go with a Powering presentation, covering the oral mode. You might even choose to do a video introduction to your portfolio to count as your oral requirement.

The Perspective of Cultural Differences Essays

The Perspective of Cultural Differences Essays The Perspective of Cultural Differences Paper The Perspective of Cultural Differences Paper The Perspective of Cultural Differences The Myth of the Latin Women by Judith Ortiz Cofer, the author states how she has been treated by different people in different countries due to their conception of her as a Latin woman. She points out several incidents where she is viewed, stereotypically, as a woman only capable of being a housewife and as a sexual object. She also shows the cross-cultural conflict Hispanics have to deal with on an everyday basis. This country, the United States is purely dominated by Caucasians, where cultural traditions are seeing in Latin women, mistakenly, something purely sexual. She points out these differences to readers to understand why there should not be racial stereotype and gender in the society. In Cofers essay, she talks about the controversial stereotypes that many Latin American women experienced and are still experiencing. In the article, she is trying to reach a specified audience of Latin American women who might have been exposed to such stereotypes themselves-for example, that of the Hispanic woman as Hot Tamale or sexual firebrand (Cofer 629). Then, she has her larger audience she is going towards, the people in this world who elieve in the stereotypes of Latin American women. A few examples are that all Latin girls are involved in some type of traditional womans work type of Job, cannot pronounce their words are energetic and sexy. She explains a personal situation when she went to a formal dance back in her grade school days. A boy asked her to go with him to dance, and of course she said yes. Throughout the formal dance, the boy leaned in for a kiss, but she quickly turned away, and then his response was, l thought you Latin girls were mature(Cofer 629). One can interpret from this portion ut of the article that an overarching theme to the authors writing style is her past experiences represented in a way that is not too forward on such a touchy subject as racial stereotypes but more in depth and revealing about actual problems experienced on this subject. The author uses very little Spanish in her article, but she used common Spanish language that even non-Spanish speaking people could still pick up on the language intended meaning. The author understands her audience is multi-cultural, therefore has different boundaries she must tip toe around. By giving some example of the words casas [households], bodega [grocery]. She repeats one word throughout the article which is Latin and Latina. She is proving a point, and reminds her audience that she is only talking about the stereotypes of Latinas and no one else. Therefore, she relies heavily on a very simplistic informative tone that expresses her experience clearly, but not in a strictly one culture view. By choosing the Spanish words to help identify the culture that she is describing she ties in people outside of that culture as well and does not use too complicated grammar for non-Spanish speakers. She wants to get her point across to the reader to not think of any other stereotypes that might be prevalent in their cultures due to her inexperience in those cultures. The tone that author created in her work has multiple aspects to it. First of all, the theme of her tone is one of serious information that has been compiled out of her past experiences. However reiterates some of the shameful racist acts she has encountered. Late one evening after the theater, my companion and I listened as the man half-recited, half bellowed Dont Cry for me, Argentina. (Cofer 630). Readers think this is the most crucial aspect f her tone in the paper, due to the fact that it gives her audience time to move away from dry information, and yet as they hear her story, they can also feel a sense of right and wrong, and how terrible these stereotypes really get. The final piece of tone that one notices is an underlying anger. She makes clear recollections of many stereotypical experiences right before she ends each one of these, there is a quick statement or interjection of hard, cold, and remembering anger at these terrible experiences and stereotypes. In retrospect I understand that my anger gave my eading fire, that I have almost always taken doubts in my abilities as a challenge-and that the result is, most times, a feeling of satisfaction at having won a convert when I see the cold, appraising eyes warm to my words, the body language change, the smile that indicates that I have opened some avenue for communication( Cofer 631). The author has made an excellent case to why it is desperately important that racial stereotypes be uprooted and forgotten. That she is a proud Latina woman does not mean she is in some narrow minded manner of thinking that would allow one to excuse her in a stereotypical manner. We are who we make ourselves in this world; the author proved that through all the stereotypes and hardships one might experience. She proved to be a talented, well-educated and expressive writer that represents her life experiences in a relevant method, making one think about the wall of stereotypes that surround these dark bouts of cruelty, which have held together negative cultural boundaries for so long. Political Econ Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Political Econ - Essay Example The government debt to GDP ratio also stood at 27.7 percent in 2014. It is also worth noting that the Australian economy is heavily reliant on natural resources thus less vulnerable. The other country in the top ten is Canada. According to Blaine, the Canadian economy is a mirror of the United States of America economy since it has a very big automotive sector (3). Over the last couple of years, there has been exponential growth of technology companies in Vancouver and Toronto. It remains the largest supplier to the US exporting oil, natural gas, hydroelectric power and uranium. About three quarter of Canada’s exports end up in the US. In 2008-2009, its automotive industry was hit very badly by the economic slump. The Canadian banks and the oil sector were able to weather the storm. The recent upsurge in oil prices and other exports have boosted the economy thus giving it a very good credit rating. The third nation is Denmark. The country’s finances are in solid shape even after the 2008-2009 recession as well as the Eurozone crisis. It has an AAA rating with the government debt being 59 percent of the GDP. Some of the nation’s strengths include the vibrant maritime sector and the stable pharmaceutical industry. Blaine points out that unemployment rates still remain high at 6.6 percent (par 4). Denmark is followed closely by Finland. Finland became an economic powerhouse in the 1990s due to the rapid telecommunication and technology growth. Nokia contributed to about 23 percent of the corporate taxes paid between 1998 and 2007. The Eurozone crisis did hurt the economy very much. In addition to this, the decline of Nokia has had a very detrimental effect on Finland’s economy. It has an unemployment rate of 8.0 percent. The fifth nation is Germany which experienced a GDP growth of 0.9 percent in 2012. The last few years have not been easy for the country due to the struggles of the Eurozone

Managing Business Organisations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Managing Business Organisations - Essay Example Sexual harassment is an issue of grave concern and it is linked to unequal power distribution in the workplace. Cultures in which male and females are encouraged to work together and where male possess excessive power than women are a victim of this desperate plight. Robbins stated in his article that â€Å"Individuals who occupy high status roles sometime believe that sexually harassing female employees is merely an extension of their right to make demands on lower status individuals.† This shows that unequal power distribution in such culture is often utilized in a negative way. We can deduce from our discussion that organization culture is among the top most factors which overwhelmingly influence the type of politics played in organization and also the extent to which power is wielded. Cultures where individual are aggressive and confrontational and where power inequalities are accepted are especially vulnerable to inimical politics and illegal use of

Coach Carter Review

Coach Carter Review Coach Carter is a 2005 film directed by Thomas Carter. It is based on a true story, after the Richmond High School basketball coach Ken Carter portrayed by (Samuel L. Jackson) made headlines in for benching his undefeated team the Richmond Oilers due to poor academic results. In this essay I will be explaining how the film Coach Carter presents one or more key characters in a positive light. Many of the characters are seen in a negative light at the beginning of the film however as the film progresses many of the characters change and are seen in a positive light. I have analysed the character of Timo Cruz. I have done this by focusing on film codes and conventions such as Camera Angles and lighting. The character of Timo Cruz is portrayed in the film by Rick Gonzalez .His character is portrayed in a negative light at the beginning of the film. He is very rude to many of his fellow players and Coach Carter. He is very stubborn and short temped. A good example of his attitude would be on coach carters first day. After five minutes of Ken Carter being coach he gets in a fight with him. He verbally abuses the Coach and even attempts to hurt him. The coach responds by getting him in a headlock and slamming him against wall and asks him to leave his gym one more time. Timo angrily walks out of the gym screaming This Aint Over! and vows never to return back to basketball. He goes back on the street trafficking and selling drugs with his cousin Renny. Film codes and conventions help the audience to gain an understanding of Timo Cruz. The Film director has used the film codes and conventions such as Camera Angles and lighting. In the beginning of the film the director has used intense lighting. Intense lighting creates both harsh light and harsh shadow. It is used to create a harsh mood, to conceal someones face or emotions or to indicate that something or someone is bad. Whenever Timo is in shot Timos Face is usually half hidden and not always showing making him making him look dark and hidden. The producer has used this to show his dark and hidden personality from view. This type of lighting gives an idea to the audience that there is more to Timo then meets the eye and it might not be all that nice. Also during the beginning of the film the director has used the low angle is a camera angle that looks up at a character. This is the opposite of a high angle and makes a character look more powerful. Timo Cruz likes to believe that is he scared of nobody and he is the most valued player in the basket ball team he believes he is powerful and strong and everyone is afraid of him. That is why the producer as used that shot to show that Timo believes that he is strong and powerful. This can make the audience feel vulnerable and small by looking up at the character giving him the impression that he is intimidating person. The character of Timo Cruz begins to change during the film. In the beginning of the film Timo left the team because of a dispute between the coach and himself. However as the film progresses Timo becomes aware of what he has done and asks to join back on the team. The coach is firm on his Decision however the coach gives in and gives Cruz a chance to come back on the team. Carter challenges him with the impossible task of 1000 suicides and 2500 pushups to be completed in less than a week. Cruz tortures himself to do it, and with the help of his teammates also doing suicides and pushups, he is able to complete them and Coach Carter allows him back on the team. This shows that instead of Cruz just quitting he pushes himself to do it. This is a major character change not to give up and do things to your best ability. When Coach Carter stops basketball practice because of the teams bad academic performance, Cruz Quits the team for a second time, eventually going back to work for Renny. L ate one night, Renny (Timos Cousin) is shot and killed on the sidewalk while Cruz is walking back to him after greeting his friends from the team. Cruz ends up at Carters house that night, apologizing for his behaviour and begging him to allow him back on the team. So Carter lets Cruz back on the team, saving him from a future like his cousins. The actions Timo has done shows that he now realises that his Actions can heavily result on his future and this is a major sign of change. Film codes and conventions again help the audience to gain an understanding of Timo Cruz as he changes during the course of the film. Firstly the main film code that has changed to show Timo in a positive light is that there is a bit more lighting. Whenever Timo is in shot we can now see a bit more of his face. Showing his expressions and feelings towards Coach Carter and his team mates, the director has done this to show that Timo is beginning to show himself and his real personality. Also now whenever Timo Cruz is with Coach Carter there are high shots of Timo Cruz. High shots are used to make the subject of the shot small and un-powerful. This is a huge change from the low shots from the beginning of the film. The director has used this shot to show the audience that Timo is now beginning to realise that he is no-longer in power and Coach Carter is. He is no-longer the mean intimidating person he once was .He now looks venerable to Coach Carter and his school and teammates. By the end of the film the character of Timo Cruz is now shown in a positive light. As Coach Carter Leaves to team Timo decides to tell him what his deepest fear is (throughout the film the Coach has been asking Timo what is his deepest fear) Timo Cruz replies: Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people dont feel insecure around most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the you. We are all meant to shine as children do. Its not just in some of us; its in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. Sir I just wanna say thank youyou saved my life. This quote means that his own fear is to not fulfil his true potential quoting Marianne Williamson in her book, R eturn to Love. From Timo calling everyone Niger to resighting poetry is a huge positive jump .Since returning on the team he has left the drugs trade for good. At the end of the movie it states he was successful of getting a scholarship. He now attends Humboldt State University where he plays basketball as a starting guard The Final film codes and conventions help the audience to gain an understanding of Timo Cruz and how he is now successful and is shown in a positive light. Firstly Timo can be fully seen in every shot there is no more intense lighting to show that he is a bad person, but the audience can completely see him in every shot. When can see all the expressions on his face, also there are no longer any high or low shots to make him look powerful or venerable there is only one shot the medium shot. This shot shows all of Timos expressions on his face. The director has used this shot to show that he is very happy and feels successful. It may be argued that the character of Timo Cruz motivates viewers .This is because despite Timos low odds of becoming successful or in case going to college he comes from the bad side of Richmond; He doesnt have a loving and supporting family, He goes to a school which has horrible academic standards and low morale, he with his cousin Renny are in the drug trafficking business. So with all of his problems stacked against him he still manages to become successful at the end of the movie it states Timo now attends Humboldt State University where he is a starting guard and also studding subjects. This motivates People including me that anyone with the attitude to can be successful no matter where youre from or who you are you can shine. Overall I have analysed how the character of Timo Cruz has succeeded despite adversity. I have shown how The director Thomas Carter has cleverly used film codes to show how Timo Cruz has been portrayed in both a negative and positive lights through lighting and Camera Shots. To show that however you are raised or where ever you are that anyone can succeeded and be successful.

The Evolution of the Value-Added Service Concept

The value added service concept has become popular recently although it has been existent for the past few decades. The concept was formally introduced by the telecommunication industry, a term they used for non-core service offerings that they were offering consumers in order to provide the consumers an incentive for purchase and as a differentiation factor for their business. Some of the characteristics of value added services are that they are usually the non core service or product offering for the business. However it is still possible for the value added services to stand alone operationally and be offered as a separate product. Another important characteristic for a value added service is that although it enhances the basic product/ service offering it should not attempt to cannibalize the main product/service offering for the business, i.e., take the customers away from the main product. The most commonly used value added services include the following:Offering different types of packaging and sizes for the productProviding specific service levels for the products with specific service level agreements for services Rewarding the consumers for their loyalty to the brand by giving them gifts and developing frequent buy programs Providing specific training and education for the product and service or a value added service center like a help line or a customer support center for the clients. â€Å"They are about performing all of those activities as close to the end consumer as possible.† (‘Impact of Value Added Service Center’, 2002)  Provide different types of qualities for the product according to the requirements of the consumer. Premium pricing can be charged on these quality levels.  Providing efficient and speedy delivery service with order tracking facilityIn the recent years however the concept of value added services has changed. Previously consumers expected the core product to be the product itself, but now consumers tend t o expect the product to have specific type of additional services and characteristics in them which were previously only considered value added services. These value added services have now become rudimentary in nature and the consumers now expect the product to have the value added services. Moreover the value added characteristic has also changed talking form of customization for the consumer. An example explaining this change is previously we used to have mobile phone with the basic capability of dialing for calls and receiving calls on a mobile device. Then the SMS, a VAS, was introduced which enabled consumers to send text messages to other people. Now the mobile phone have digital camera, mp3/mp4 players and an operating system which also were introduced as Value added services but now have become an integral feature of the product it self. The reason for the change in the dynamics relating to value added service offering has been mainly due to the consumers’ perception o f the products and their expectations. They have come to expect certain kind of vale added services to be a component of the product itself, even though it is actually a value added service. This has lead to customization for many consumer goods taking place where business are using niche marketing strategies to provide products and services which are very specialized and customized and in natureThe value added services offered have evolved largely also due the technology available to the companies as well. They have tried to differentiate their product/ service offering by making their operations more efficient and investing in technologies which have let them achieve comparative advantage. One of such technological investment has been in the packaging industry.   Ã¢â‚¬Å"Evolution isn't a theory in packaging; it's a fact of life. Corrugated and folding carton converters stake their survival on evolving their menu of value-added services to meet the changing needs of their custome rs. That can require a substantial investment in technology.† (‘The Evolution of Relationship Selling’, 2005)In the future as well as the dynamics of consumer consumption decisions and purchase decisions change the value added services offered by corporations and businesses will tend to evolve and change in order to respond to the latent and apparent needs and requirements of the consumer.References:(2005), The Evolution of Relationship Selling, Paperboard Packaging.Mylonopoulos, N. The Role of Communication in Team Dynamics Essays

The Role of Communication in Team Dynamics Essays The Role of Communication in Team Dynamics Essay The Role of Communication in Team Dynamics Essay One of the most critical, if not the most critical aspect of team dynamics is communication. Effective or ineffective communication can lead to a team being extremely efficient and successful, or inefficient and a terrible failure. â€Å"Ineffective communication can be a source of discontent in a team† (Newson, 2006). The purpose of team communication is to enhance team performance; therefore, it is each team member’s responsibility to ensure effective communication. Communication is an observable aspect of coordination, and insights into observable behaviors which predict high or low performances can be gained by team communication analysis† (Hutchins et al. 1999). Four crucial elements teams must possess to communicate effectively are a willingness to have open authentic discussions, active listening, willingness to confront conflicts, and understanding. There are several factors a team has to consider when creating the environment for o pen authentic discussions. One of the key factors is determining how each individual on the team communicates, and to access each individual team member’s strengths and weaknesses as it pertains to clearly expressing their views and opinions. Once this information is captured, then members will have a better understanding as to how to get all team members to participate in discussing key topics related to team goals. It is important that team members who are more expressive do not use this as an opportunity to dominate a more introverted team member. Clear objective conversations should be encouraged. Team members should present information in a very black and white manner (factual). Open discussions are a great way to get to know your team members. These discussions will reveal thing about your teammates that will help in your team’s communication process. So, encourage open discussions, this will lead to team trust. When team members are having discussions it is necessary that everyone is being an active listener. Team members should show an interest in the information being delivered by the speaker, before responding or reacting to anything that was said by the speaker. Team members should ask questions and/or summarize the information that was given to ensure understanding. Active listening can also be called sympathetic listening and it can be broken down into a four-step process. First, mimic the content. Second, rephrase the content. Third, reflect feelings, i. e. , understand the other persons feelings as well as your own. Fourth, empathize, rephrase the content and reflect feelings (Christol, 2008). The goal here is to try to understand the person’s thoughts and feelings to gain a better understanding. Asking questions such as â€Å"Let me make sure I heard you correctly†¦Ã¢â‚¬ or â€Å"Let me make sure I have everything†¦Ã¢â‚¬ , is an excellent sign that someone is actively listening. In class discussions are a perferct example of listening actively. While the professor is speaking the student is having constent conversation with the professor to ensure their understanding. Active listening can be taught and is a skill that needs to be practiced and incorporated into our daily communication. Being able to confront conflict within a team is also key to communication. There will not always be harmony within teams. Sometimes when things are not made clear, conflict shows it’s ugly head. A team charter is an example to how to make things clear within a team, which should address specifics about exactly what to expect from team members in order to achieve the team’s overall goals (University of Phoenix, 2008). There will be times where team members will have to agree to disagree in order to resolve conflicts. Remember, a team consists of three or more people and each person is unique in their own way. Therefore, it’s not a matter of if conflict will happen, it’s a matter of when will conflict happen in my team. No one likes to confront conflict by nature; however, we need to know how to confront it whenever it arises. Honesty is a great approach when confronting conflict. Team members will have a greater respect for you if you can approach them with honesty. This ties back to having those open authentic discussions. Although being open and honest may step on some toes, ultimately, it’s worth it in order to resolve the conflict. If things can’t be resolved among team members, it is ok to involve a mediator such as a faculty member, but beware. Faculty members will revert to your team charter to determine what your team agreed upon as it pertains to conflict resolutions. Be sure your charter is very specific. There will be instances that will be unavoidable and uncontrollable when dealing with teams. We are human beings and life happens whether we want it to or not. Our children get sick, our cars break down, and family members pass away. These are just a few of the things we need to have some level of understanding when it comes to teams. Once again, here is where the charter will play a role. There needs to be a revision in the charter that pertains to what if a team member is not able to participate on an assignment due to an emergency? How will this be addressed as a team? If the team has built a solid relationship, it will not be difficult for the members to step up in the absence of another member. However it is critical that the team member who is experiencing the emergency contact the other team members the moment it is known that he or she will not be able to deliver or perform the task the other team members expect them to have. If this is done, this will allow the other team members to make whatever adjustments they need to their schedules to manage the unexpected added responsibility. Life happens, but with effective communication there is no challenge that cannot be managed. In conclusion, according to Jim Temme and Jeanine Katzel (1995, 14), involvement must truly be auspicious. Team members need to hear each other’s suggestions and act on them when needed. To participate authentically means all ideas are ok and good ones are rewarded with positive feedback. When team members criticize each other’s ideas causes them to keep things to themselves. Team intimacy is achieved when there is open communication and no fear of making comments. Keeping in mind the authentic discussions, active listening, willingness to confront conflict and understanding are the keys to effective communication within teams. References Christol, T. Names of Plants, Food, and Drinks Formed by Folk Etymology

Names of Plants, Food, and Drinks Formed by Folk Etymology Names of Plants, Food, and Drinks Formed by Folk Etymology Names of Plants, Food, and Drinks Formed by Folk Etymology By Mark Nichol This post lists words for plants, food, and drinks, as well as some terms associated with drinks, derived from words in other languages as a result of folk etymology, a process by which speakers adopt the foreign terms after revising them by using existing elements from their native language. artichoke: The name of the vegetable stems ultimately from the Arabic word al-khurshÃ… «f by way of the Spanish term alcarchofa and the Italian term arcicioffo (rendered articiocco in an Italian dialect), with the English form likely influenced by choke. avocado: The native word for this New World fruit is ahuacatl, which was rendered into Spanish as aguacate, which in turn came to be spelled and pronounced like a now-obsolete Spanish word meaning â€Å"lawyer.† (Note the resemblance to advocate.) That word was then adopted into English. burger: This word is a shortening of hamburger, which originally was styled as Hamburger to denote a resident of Hamburg, Germany, or various things originating there. The connection to Hamburg is obscure, but a patty of ground meat was called a hamburg steak during the late nineteenth century and later, when paired with a bun, a hamburger sandwich, then simply a hamburger. After cheeseburger was coined, hamburger was often shortened to burger. cocktail: This term for a mixed alcoholic drink or, by extension, various mixtures of substances (as in â€Å"fruit cocktail†) has an uncertain origin, but it may derive from the French term coquetier (meaning â€Å"egg cup†), from the use of such containers to serve mixed drinks in the late eighteenth century. demijohn: Several hundred years ago, a large, round bottle wrapped in wicker was in French termed a damejeanne (meaning â€Å"Lady Jane,† perhaps from its anthropomorphic appearance). Nearly a century later, an adaptation of the term was adopted into English. mandrake: Originally, in Greek, mandragoras, the term for a plant whose root has narcotic qualities passed into English through Latin. Because of the resemblance of the middle of the word to dragon, the term was adapted by folk etymology to end with drake, an English variation of dragon. mangrove: The Spanish word for this tropical coastal tree is mangue (likely adapted from a Caribbean language), and in Portuguese it is called mangle. Adopted into Middle English as mangrow, it evolved to its current form influenced by grove, meaning â€Å"a stand of trees.† mistletoe: Mistel, of uncertain origin, was the name of this shrub that grows on trees and is associated with Christmas (originally, with fertility, hence the custom of kissing under a sprig of the plant around the time of the holiday); in Old English, it was called misteltÄ n (â€Å"mistel twig†), and the fading emphasis on the final syllable resulted in the current spelling. mushroom: The name for various species of fungus is derived from the Latin term mussirionem by way of the Old French word meisseron and its Anglo-French variation, musherun. pumpkin: The name of the gourd was derived from the Greek word pepon, meaning â€Å"melon†; the second syllable of the Middle English descendant pompone (also spelled pumpion) was altered to the diminutive syllable -kin. saltcellar: A bowl or other container for salt was in Old French called a salier; this term, transformed by folk etymology into cellar, was redundantly attached to the English word salt to describe such an object. serviceberry: This edible berry acquired its name from the resemblance of the fruit to that of the genus Sorbus, some species of which are called service trees; service is derived from the Latin genus name and is unrelated to serve. (The alternative names juneberry and shadberry derive from the fact that the berries ripen in June, at about the same time as shad proliferate in creeks in New England.) sparrowgrass: Asparagus, borrowed directly from the Latin version of asparagos, the Greek word for an edible plant, was altered by folk etymology to sparrowgrass. Welsh rabbit: The name given to melted cheese on toast or a dish with melted cheese and bread was originally a jocular reference, at the expense of the Welsh people, to cheese as a poor persons substitute for rabbit meat, a delicacy; â€Å"Welsh rarebit† is a variant. witch hazel: The first word in the name of the tree derives from the Old English word wice, meaning â€Å"pliable†; the use of witch hazel twigs as divining rods may have prompted the alteration of the name. wormwood: The alteration of the Old English word wermod, denoting the wormwood plant, the aromatic herb harvested from it, and its derivative, absinthe, perhaps stemmed from the bitter aftertaste of the liquor. Vermouth comes from the German equivalent, Wermuth; that liquor was originally flavored with the herb. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Transistor level implementation of karaoke machine with 6 band graphic Essay - 1

Transistor level implementation of karaoke machine with 6 band graphic equalizer - Essay Example The project, entitled "Transistor Level Implementation of Karaoke Machine with six-band Graphic Equalizer," aims to develop a transistor-based, Karaoke-type amplifier that is able to run from the mains power supply and consists of the following elements: 1. a 12-V regulated power supply, 2. two inputs: a microphone and a line input, 3. a Common-emitter mixer/preamplifier stage, 4. a six-band graphic equalizer stage, 5. a Common-emitter voltage amplifier stage, 6. a Common-collector power amplifier stage, and, 7. a loudspeaker output; as indicated in the schematic diagram below. Figure 1. Project Schematic Diagram Circuit Design and Operation Power Supply Power supplies, as defined by Howard (1998), are electronic circuits, basically composed of four sections: transformer, rectifier, filter, and regulator, designed such that an input ac signal is converted to dc, at any desired level. Shown below is a block diagram of a basic power supply. Figure 2. Basic Power Supply Block Diagram Th e input line voltage is either stepped up or stepped down by the transformer, depending on the application; in this case, a step-down transformer, T1 rated at 9.5Vac (10.5Vac on actual testing), was used, giving a peak voltage of 14.84V (Vp = 10.5 x ?2), and allowing the device to run from the mains power supply. In addition to that, the power supply is being isolated by this section from the power line. The rectifier section, specifically a full-wave bridge rectifier D1, then converts the resulting signal, still ac, to a pulsating dc, which is made purer by a simple capacitor (C18) filter section, giving a dc hold capacitor peak voltage of 13.44V (Vp – 2(0.7) = 14.84 – 1.4). This leaves enough voltage overhead for the final section, the 12V-regulator IC1 (LM7812) that maintains output at a constant level of 12V and about 1.3A continuous, regardless of changes in load current and/or input line voltages. This configuration has minimum power loss, and negates the need fo r a heat sink on IC1. The capacitor C19 removes any spikes from the regulator for a smoother output. Howard (1998) Mixer/Preamplifier When a combination of two or more audio signals is expected in a single output, simply connecting the inputs will result to the degradation of system efficiency and poor overall performance due to impedance mismatches of different signal sources and the amplifier input. Furthermore, the differing signal amplitudes of the sources, too, presents another problem since direct connection may result to higher-amplitude inputs obliterating the weaker inputs, and even worse, damage the sources. By isolating inputs and providing independently variable gains at each of these inputs, an audio mixer eliminates both dilemmas aforementioned, allowing input signals to be blend in the desired ratio. (Gibilisco, 2002) Shown below is a sample circuit of a simple transistor-based two-channel mixer/preamplifier. Figure 3. Transistor-based Two-channel Mixer/Preamplifier I n this project, two signals, one from a microphone (J1) and another from a line input (J2) are to be mixed. Potentiometers (R1 and R4) were utilized as volume controls for each channel, adjusting the amount of signal passing from the inputs, from a maximum of the entire signal (Rmicin = R1||R3||RQ1in = 10k||10k||2.3k = 1.58kohm, Rlinein = R4||RQ1in = 10k||2.3k

The anti-terrorism law in the U.K. and its overall impact Coursework

The anti-terrorism law in the U.K. and its overall impact - Coursework Example However, in the middle of the middle of the government’s role to provide security of its citizens, the anti-terrorist laws have created a huge negative impact. This report will discuss the anti-terrorism law in the U.K. and its overall impact. Light will be shed on how this law has innocently disrupted lives. Introduction Oxford dictionary defines terrorism as the â€Å"unofficial and unauthorized use of violence in the pursuit of political aims (Oxford Dictionary, 2012).† Terrorism is not a new concept, it has been used since the prehistoric times but it is relatively hard to describe in words that can encompass the entire concept behind this term. Terrorism has been used as both, a tactic as well as a strategy; for criminal purposes and as a holy duty. Whatever is case; an act of terrorism is extremely reprehensible and has no justifications what so ever. Unfortunately, this line of thought is not adopted by all people. Terrorism has always been useful approach for th e side whose argument or strength is weaker as compared to the other. On a larger, national scale, terrorism is defined as the use of violence to inculcate fear in the minds of people and intimidate and coerce governments and different societies to pursue goals of the terrorists. The reason why terrorism is so wrong is because its influence goes way beyond just the intended victim, it at times have consequences for entire nations (Terrorism Research, 2012). Terrorism Ever since the incident of twin towers in America on 9th September, 2001, the threat of terrorism has magnified. Ever since that unforgettable day referred to as 9/11, terrorism is a word that looms large in the minds of people. War against terrorism is a commonly heard term and many different nations as well Britain are participants in this war to provide their citizens with a sense of security and to keep them safe from terrorists. However, for the United Kingdom, there is nothing new about the threat of terrorism or the legal response to it. Throughout the course of history, Britain has been the victim of many terrorist acts. However, for the purpose of this report, the events, legislation and the effect of that legislation prior to 2001 will not be considered. The disastrous occurrence of 9/11 did not result in any immediate or drastic change in the legislation that was directed towards curbing terrorism. Most of the legislation pertaining to terrorism already existed. However as a direct consequence of 9/11, The Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001 were passed. This terrorism act incorporated in the British legislation has resulted in Britain having the most comprehensive legal framework in all of Europe to fight terrorism (Bennet, 2005). The Anti-Terrorism Act The Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001 were aimed at amending the Terrorism Act 2000. Its purpose was to include more stipulation about terrorism and security. It provided provisions for the freezing of assets and immig ration and asylum. The act intended to amend as well as extend the scope of criminal law and its powers for preventing crime from happening and enforcing that law. The Act included in it laws which made retention of communication data legal. The Act also included provisions for the control of pathogens and toxins (Anti-terrorism, 2001). The major constituent of the bill was the government of the time’s determination to find a way of dealing with foreign nationals and visitors who were suspected of involvement in terrorism activities by

Activities Problem(s) c16 2,7,14,and 21, c17 7 and 25 Essay

Activities Problem(s) c16 2,7,14,and 21, c17 7 and 25 - Essay Example If you did quit, you expect you could find a new job paying $85,000 per year, but you would be unemployed for 3 months while you search for it. Marpor Industries has no debt and expects to generate free cash flows of $16 million each year. Marpor believes that if it permanently increases its level of debt to $40 million, the risk of financial distress may cause it to lose some customers and receive less favorable terms from its suppliers. As a result, Marpor’s expected free cash flows with debt will be only $15 million per year. Suppose Marpor’s tax rate is 35%, the risk-free rate is 5%, the expected return of the market is 15%, and the beta of Marpor’s free cash flows is 1.10 (with or without leverage). You own your own firm, and you want to raise $30 million to fund an expansion. Currently, you own 100% of the firm’s equity, and the firm has no debt. To raise the $30 million solely through equity, you will need to sell two-thirds of the firm. However, you would prefer to maintain at least a 50% equity stake in the firm to retain control. Natsam Corporation has $250 million of excess cash. The firm has no debt and 500 million shares outstanding with a current market price of $15 per share. Natsam’s board has decided to pay out this cash as a one-time dividend. d. Suppose Raviv retained the cash so that it would not need to raise new funds from outside investors for an expansion it has planned for next year. If it did raise new funds, it would have to pay issuance fees. How much does Raviv need to save in issuance fees to make retaining the cash beneficial for its investors? (Assume fees can be expensed for corporate tax

Comparative Study of Personal Financial Planning Essay Example for Free

Comparative Study of Personal Financial Planning Essay It is generally seen that people have a misconception that financial planning is about saving more and spending less but that is not the case, it is more about saving the right amount so that future goals can be met. The objective of financial planning is * To ensure that the right amount of money is available in right hands at right point of time in the future to achieve the desired goals and objectives. It * Provides direction and meaning to your financial decisions. * It allows you to understand how each financial decision you make affects other areas of your finances. Financial planning and investments can be undertaken by anyone with a clear assessment of ones inflow of funds and the goals that need to be achieved from time to time. Keywords: Financial planning, wealth management, investment instruments, real estate Introduction Financial planning is achieving your financial goals in the most efficient manner. The broad areas of financial planning include Investment planning  -Your wealth will only grow over time if you have invested it in assets. Investment planning  deals with the kind of investments an individual should invest in to get the best out of his wealth. In this the risk and return profiling of an individual is done based on his life stage, spending requirements with respect to his income and wealth, time horizon and liquidity requirements and various individual specific constraints. Investment Planning is important because it helps you to derive the maximum benefit from your investments. | Cash flow planning   In simple terms, cash flow refers to the inflow and outflow of money. It is a record of your income and expenses. Though this sounds simple, very few people actually take time out to find out what comes in and what goes out of their hands each month. Cash flow planning refers to the process of identifying the major expenditures in future (both short-term and long-term) and making planned investments so that the required amount is accumulated within the required time frame. Cash flow planning is the first thing that should be done prior to starting an investment exercise, because only then will you be in a position to know how your finances look like, and what is it that you can invest without causing a strain on yourself. The Use of magic in A Midsummers Night Dream :: William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Nights Dream

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The use and misuse of magic has an important role in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. As a reoccurring theme, Puck’s use of magic creates humor, conflict and balance in the play.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The magic of Puck changes the head of Bottom into that of a donkey. Puck’s own use magic adds more humor to the already comical and over-confident character of Bottom. Puck’s magic also creates a great deal of humor in the dealings of Bottom and Titania. The contrasted humor is clearly shown as Titania weaves flowers into the hair of Bottom’s donkey like head. Titania is a beautiful and delicate creature, while Bottom is completely grotesque. Magic creates an unreal image of Bottom, which in turn creates a comical contrast between Bottom and Titania. As part of the already comical sub-plot, Bottom’s altering through magic adds even more humor to the overall play.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Next, the misuse of magic causes conflict among the four Athenian lovers. When Puck mistakenly applies the love potion to Lysander’s eyelids. At this point, both male characters of the main plot have fallen in love with Helena, leaving Hermia out of balance. The struggle of the four lovers is one of the more complicated conflicts in the play. The conflict could have been avoided if Puck did not misuse his magic. However, because Puck mistakenly used his magic on Lysander, conflict erupted.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Lastly, just as Puck’s magic caused turmoil and chaos among the lovers, it also aided in restoring balance. As the play ends, Puck no longer holds Lysander under his spell, however, Demetrius remains enchanted. It is important that Lysander is no longer enchanted. At this point, Lysander can return to Hermia. It is equally important that Demetrius remains under Puck’s magic because it is the only way that he will love Helena. Kraft Foods Essay

Kraft Foods is an extremely well recognized brand that provides a vast array of food and beverage products with the ultimate goal â€Å"to become North America’s best food and beverage company† (Kraft, 2014). Critical analysis of Kraft Foods mission, vision and values statements revealed some necessary changes to enhance organizational success. Kraft Foods will become the top in their industry by continuing to develop and sell products tailored to their consumers needs/demands. Assisting consumers to make healthy life choices is part of their dedication to stakeholders. Through incentives and rewards employees will remain dedicated, motivated and have pride in Kraft Foods products thereby increasing financial growth. Kraft Foods understands that contributing to the community is essential for lasting success. Actively protecting natural resources will leave a huge footprint and legacy for Kraft Foods.  Kraft Foods mission statement is very generic and broad in nature. By narrowing and focusing this goal they will guarantee their future success. The vision and values statements are well written and invoke memories and emotions from their stakeholders thereby drawing them to Kraft Foods. Introduction Since its establishment in 1903 Kraft Foods has become a well respected household name (Kraft Foods, 2014). Over the last century Kraft Foods has bought out many of their competitors and expanded their line of products, keeping them as one of the top food and beverage companies in the nation (Kraft Foods). In order to remain successful and accomplish their mission  it is imperative their business statements accurately reflect their vision and values. In this paper the author will discuss the mission, vision and values of Kraft Foods and how these powerful statements contribute to their overall success in the industry. Mission Statement Analysis Every organization should present a powerful clearly articulated statement as to why their organization exists (McNamara, 2009). This statement should convey to outside stakeholders the benefits of conducting business together to increase chances of financial success. Kraft Food’s mission statement reads â€Å"our aim is to be North America’s best food and beverage company† (Kraft Foods, 2014). Kraft Food’s mission statement is very simple, generic and lacks sufficient depth, especially given the size of the Kraft Foods organization. Mission statements should include strong powerful words that articulate and enunciate an organization, resulting in a memorable impression that remains on the forethought of all the stakeholders (Ramjee, n.d.). A mission statement is short term future goals and it is therefore imperative that organizations readdress their mission statements from time to time (Rector, 2010). With all the health phenomenon concerns in North America it is pivotal Kraft Foods continue to reevaluate their mission and re-strategize as needed to remain on the top of their industry and draw new clientele to their organization. The ability to use different marketing strategies, seize different opportunities will draw new stakeholders to Kraft Foods thereby ensuring mission success and financial growth. Vision Statement Analysis An efficient and effective vision statement is a powerful tool that paints a vivid picture while describing how an organization is going to accomplish their mission (McNamara, 2009). This one statement can convey power, confidence and inspire stakeholders (Change Factory, 2014). A vision statement takes into consideration an organizations market, customers, strengths and weaknesses in order to enhance themselves (Change Factory). Kraft Foods vision statement reads â€Å"we’ll get there by continuing to offer products consumers love, creating a performance-based culture that motivates  and excites employees and becomes the best investment in the industry† (Kraft Foods, 2014). With this simple sentence Kraft Foods inspires, motivates and invokes memories from their stakeholders. Painting a vivid picture for stakeholders invokes emotions from past experiences. These memorable impressions stay with stakeholders and they are therefore more likely to support Kraft Foods. This influential statement also describes the most cherished values, services and vision of the future thereby allowing stakeholders to determine if their personal values meet up with that of Kraft Foods future and if investment in this organization is beneficial (Crea, n.d.). Another aspect of vision statements is the ability to state realistic outcomes (Millard, 2010). Realistic outcomes are imperative as they motivate employees and help them focus on something bigger than themselves (Millard). Meeting these goals, â€Å"offering products consumers love† enhances dedications, motivation and pride, which will further enhance Kraft Foods success (Kraft Foods, 2014). The vision statement for Kraft Foods is well articulated, creates a vision of the future company, invokes emotions and draws stakeholders to the organization. Values Statement Analysis In addition to mission and vision statements a values statement will enhance an organizations chance of future success. A values statement is the core of an organization and what values they cherish (Edmunds, 2014). It defines how employees will behave and how actions and behaviors will be evaluated (Edmunds). A values statement reveals how an organization values not only their customers, but suppliers, shareholders and stakeholders (Edmunds). At Kraft Foods their values statement reads to â€Å"make a difference in communities, protect greatest resources – land, air, water, people, educate and motivate to make healthful choices, food safety and quality, and workplace safety† (Kraft Foods, 2014). It is essential a values statement identify and address the organizational values in a clear concise manner so every stakeholder knows and understands what will be tolerated within the organization. The clear writing of Kraft Foods vision statement allows people to contribute to something bigger then themselves. An added benefit of a values statement is rewards and recognitions are structured around this  statement and those employees who embrace the organizational values are identified and rewarded (Edmunds). This statement tells shareholders how the organization hires and promotes individuals and demonstrates that Kraft Foods external suppliers are in alignment with the organizations values, thus enhancing bonds of trust and respect. Alignment of Goals/Needs with Stakeholders Interests The mission, vision and value statements all work together to define an organization. Additionally these statements need to address the goals and needs of the shareholders and stakeholders thereby insuring future investors. Through their business statements Kraft Foods specifically addressed four stakeholder needs they hope to meet. Kraft Foods addresses consumers by focusing on â€Å"quality, safe food that consumers love† in their vision and values statements (Kraft Foods, 2014). Additionally Kraft Foods values statement discusses their dedication to helping North Americans â€Å"make healthy food choices† (Kraft Foods). Their dedication is also evident by the accumulation of healthy name brands products, such as Back to Nature granola (Kraft Foods). The values statement of Kraft Foods also addresses the organizations dedication to â€Å"making a difference in the community† (Kraft Foods, 2014). Kraft Foods is leaving a positive impression, huge footprints and taking massive strides â€Å"to make the world a better place with every action they take† (Kraft Foods). This is apparent by their dedication to food drives aimed at fighting hunger, providing humanitarian support, building playgrounds, and planting gardens (Kraft Foods). Kraft Foods also addresses their employees, one of the biggest stakeholders, in their business statements. Employees at Kraft Foods are â€Å"treated with respect, provided a safe work environment, and encouraged to do great things† (Kraft Foods, 2014). This organization understands that success is dependent on motivated, driven and dedicated employees that take pride in their work. Additionally, through their business statements Kraft Foods is telling the outside world about their employee commitment thus developing respect from the community, industry and other stakeholders. Kraft Foods understands that in order to be successful a strong cooperate governance must be establish to help balance the needs of shareholders and stakeholders (Kraft Foods, 2014). â€Å"Kraft Foods Board of Directors believe effective corporate governance provides a strong framework to assist them in upholding their fiduciary responsibilities to shareholders and promote long term success of the organization† (Kraft Foods). Improvements of the Company Statements Kraft Foods is one of the largest organizations in North America and it is essential their business statements accurately reflect their dedication and drive to succeed. Although admirable, Kraft Foods mission statement is very generic and lacks the special connection to draw stakeholders to the organization. In comparing McNamara’s list of criteria for a well written mission statement Kraft Foods falls short (2009). This statement is not powerful, not memorable, does not discuss growth and profit sufficiently and does not target specific clientele (McNamara). Additionally their goals are extremely far reaching and unattainable. The mission statement needs to be more focused in order to keep stakeholders motivated and driven for success. The vision statement is well written and invokes emotions and memories from stakeholders while also being descriptive in how they will achieve success. Millard states vision statements should be clear, memorable, realistic and discuss positive outcomes (2010). Kraft Foods addresses each one of these criteria in their vision statement. This powerful statement draws stakeholders to the organization and makes they want to be a part of the success. It is the author’s opinion that Kraft Foods values statement clearly articulates the values Kraft Foods cherishes. This statement motivates people to join the Kraft Foods team and become part of something bigger. Kraft Foods is dedicated to leaving a lasting impression and legacy not only with consumers but the environment and this is clearly communicated in their values statement. Conclusion Developed in 1903 Kraft Foods has become one of North America top brands. Through their mission, vision and values statement Kraft Foods is able to communicate to stakeholders why the organization exists, where they are going in the future, how they will get there and their dedication to the world around them. Although some adjustments can be made to their mission statement, overall these statements are clearly written and draw stakeholders to Kraft Foods by invoking their emotions, memories and values.
